Peter Cusack
hi. i've just set up a stream in suffolk, uk on the edge of Halesworth, a small market town. https://radio.aporee.org:8443/peterc it's in the corner of a field with cows. sheep are also nearby. the weather has been very stormy in the last days with torrential rain. the wind continues, so most of the osund in wind in leavers (tall black poplar trees). there are more planes in the sky showing flights are slowly resuming. crows and rooks flock, sometimes in large numbers. at dusk 6.30/7.30 uk time (7.30/8.30 cet) hopefully there will be tawny owls hooting. they have been busy over the past few nights.

nice Peter, I'll tune in around 9pm Berlin time, will switch it then also on air on radio aporee. At the moment I'm tuned to Moorlinse again, nice birds activity and deep drone because of more wind coming from direction Autobahn. https://radio.aporee.org:8443/mobilemic8

lots of waterfowl

5 different types of ducks, 3 of geese, 2 of Podiceps family (I know of...) but missed the Savi's warbler this year. Saw a bunch of cranes 2 days ago. And now a siren, typical Berlin city sound. Interesting
GS

Grant Smith
an amazing sense of autumn as a gathering of flows
20:02
do u think the geese and ducks are gathering before migration?
or just in the evening?
u
20:06
unosonic
not sure, definitely the geese fly in in the evening, in big flocks. Some ducks might be guests from the north and stay, other may have gone.
GS
20:07
Grant Smith
ah yes ok - so maybe a combination
20:09
it s immensely concentrated
20:10
the soundworld as a whole
u
20:10
unosonic
that's also because it's a small pond and many birds ;)
GS
20:10
Grant Smith
for sure!
u
20:11

Great egret goes fishing there too, elegant creature
GS
20:12
Grant Smith
in a rural setting i guess you often hear
water birds more dispersed, far off, calls coming over the water from distance
20:13
here more compressed
20:13
yes! v japanese woodblock
u
20:15
unosonic
it starts to rain
20:18
some species show different behaviour in cities. Crows have way smaller territories, Berlin's city foxes don't date the forest ones anymore... ;)
GS

Grant Smith
ha - nice rain. ppl here need to eat - i will check back -
maybe for owls on peter s stream -
thank you!
u

it's a nice wind and we hear cows digesting... no owls so far
PC

Peter Cusack
Sadly no owl tonight. A lot of rooms flying overhead earlier.
21:28
Rooks- an over active spellcheck.
u

I was googling rooms ... ;)

yes i hope for more.
GS
21:50
Grant Smith
in trees beyond the reedbeds maybe?
21:51
the calls carry so clearly..
PC
21:52
Peter Cusack
distant yes, but no reeds. the wind is through tree leaves. poplars have a more clattery sound.
GS
21:53
Grant Smith
ah ok thank you
the way they reverberate.. the owl calls - is that off the terrain, i was wondering.. or is it part of the vocalisation?
21:54
i mean there s the flutter.. but then also reverb?

aha good - an owl effect

In reply to this message
a pheasant
GS
21:56
Grant Smith
yes quite raucous
22:04
there this line in a poem:
22:05
Every night we listened
22:05
for a horned owl
22:06
(A Summer’s Dream by Elizabeth Bishop)
22:06
you can t tell whether they heard it
PC

That happens with streams sometimes. Attention drifts, you've perhaps heard something, but are not sure. Those ones stay in the memory.

...
We were awakened in the dark by
the somnambulist brook
nearing the sea,
still dreaming audibly.
GS
22:10
Grant Smith
yes!
22:13
In reply to this message
sometimes with owls especially you wonder if you heard or dreamed them
22:22
it s interesting: both streams we been listening to have these patches up close and then further off: lines, trajectories
22:23
(flights, trains, autobahn..)
22:27
the patches seem to have a particular quality,
maybe because they comprise innumerable small sounds eg poplar leaves each turning on a thin petiole
u
22:29
unosonic
they create depth too. interesting when you don't know the place
GS
22:29
Grant Smith
yes
PC
22:32
Peter Cusack
i think it's also the contour of the landscape that channels sound (and wind that carries sound) in very particular directions and patterns unique to each location. lines of trees seem to be lines of sonic flow.
GS
22:33
Grant Smith
how this sense of space and complexity is conveyed through those little holes on the front of the capsules still seems borderline inconceivable / magical
22:33
(at times, at least to me)
22:33
In reply to this message
ah yes
22:34
i remember listening to a very windy location which we knew
22:34
and things off to the right were appearing in the left channel at times
22:35
i think sounds were being caught in wind currents and moved around..
22:36
so lines of trees.. yes
22:41
i read that in britain there used to be a minister of air
PC
22:42
Peter Cusack
now we have ministers of hot air
GS
22:42
Grant Smith
ha it s true
22:43
for a moment this seemed quite radical but i think it was basically a minister for aircraft
22:47
in l aldea on the ebro delta there is a museu d el vent - a museum of wind
22:48
it was closed. but i feel this stream would be in it
PC
22:50
Peter Cusack
yes combined streams of wind could make a nice installation
GS
22:51
Grant Smith
i tried to contact the curator
22:51
i think he s in bogotá
u
22:52
unosonic
what's exhibited there?
GS
22:52
Grant Smith
one way or another we should do it
22:53
well i m not sure - it s a v nice project - sometimes i think they had weather vanes - sometimes it was more.. conceptual
PC
22:54
Peter Cusack
is there also a museum of rain somewhere?
22:56
ah i don t know but i would go
23:02
that v choppy aircraft sound - is that the wind or phasing? or both?
23:02
or neither?
PC
23:04
Peter Cusack
yes it was choppy - don't have an explanation
GS
23:07
Grant Smith
hmm me neither
PC
23:08
Peter Cusack
i really like these long rising and falling gusts of wind that we hear at the moment. very smooth forms
GS
23:08
Grant Smith
is this the same streambox with iq audio hat and pui capsules? which you used for the reedbad w bitterns?
23:08
yes!
PC
23:08
Peter Cusack
yes, identical
GS
23:09
Grant Smith
sounds wonderful - the sense of
masses of air is something
23:10
rising and falling.. as you say
PC
23:12
Peter Cusack
the one thing missing in the stream is the directionality. when standing there you can hear the gusts approaching through distant trees, then arriving, then receeding again. maybe 4ch streaming would be neccesary for that.
GS
23:13
Grant Smith
ah yes - so front and back is missing
23:14
or is it that you feel the wind hit you
PC
23:14
Peter Cusack
more the full 3D experience of the place
GS
23:15
Grant Smith
yes i understand - it s v different
23:18
at sc we really never use the term ‘immersive’
PC
23:18
Peter Cusack
sorry i'm called to do the washing up. so will leave for a while. wishing you a very good night.
GS
23:18
Grant Smith
we just dont feel immersed haha good night
23:18
thanks very much for the stream!
PC
23:19
Peter Cusack
the stream will be running till sometime tomorrow

just having a visit from some large, grunting animal at Peter's stream
23:52

there are indeed cows nearby ;)
