dears, I have an unplanned steam running in Berlin Königsheide forest, at a pond. Don't know how long the battery will last, but if you like, tune in at https://radio.aporee.org:8443/mobilemic8
21:03
Frogs at the moment, birds picking around the microphones, and the roaring weekend city (feels almost post pandemic...) in the distance
P
21:08
Petra Kapš OR poiesis
hello, listening, thanks!
21:09
Waw, frogs close by...what a sound
PC
21:10
Peter Cusack
yes very nice perspective
u
21:11
unosonic
it's a pretty small pond, but the only place with surface water in this forest. Many birds come here for a bath and drink. Frog concerts have started only recently
21:14
the traffic is really intense today. I guess may people are driving around with their cars. you can hear these exhausts loud as hell, pretty all over the place since a while.
GS
21:18
Grant Smith
nice frogs
u
21:19
unosonic
waiting for a concert, there are many... ;)
GS
21:21
Grant Smith
really complex!
21:21
was there a lot of rain recently?
u
21:21
unosonic
here we go ;)
21:22
not much rain the last days.
W
21:23
Wijnand
Sounds great!!! 👍
GS
21:23
Grant Smith
fantastic! is it near the ground?
u
21:23
unosonic
now is sunset
21:24
the mics are hidden in a thick wooden fence, about 60cm above ground
GS
21:25
Grant Smith
ah i see - and it's transmitting with a 4g dongle?
u
21:25
unosonic
it's a mobile 4G/wifi hotspot
W
21:25
Wijnand
I hear some people ..
GS
21:26
Grant Smith
i like the way the picture on the stream page you made is quite unremarkable, but the stream is a revelation
21:26
amazing demonstration of the value of quite small scale pockets of diversity
21:28
although the reserve is quite a big area, i see..
u
21:29
unosonic
it's an interesting place, some patches in the forest look almost mediterranian
21:29
it's surrounded by residential areas
GS
21:30
Grant Smith
the birdsong is really varied
u
21:32
unosonic
today I have been at a places which were amazing, in terms of bird song, along a small Berlin inner city river. will try to place a mic there the next week.
W
21:34
Wijnand
It's mayby said that there is mostly always human noise in the sound of natute!
21:34
Nature
u
21:35
unosonic
that forces us to think about nature, and its meanings. and what we want and can have.
W
21:35
Wijnand
Yes wright!
GS
21:37
Grant Smith
for sure - the traffic really throws the sounds by the pond into relief
21:38
maybe frogs also like these edgy areas
21:38
birds seem to like friction and disputes along boundaries
21:39
so they pull out the synthetic fur too?
21:40
'it's a mobile 4G/wifi hotspot' - ah i see
u
21:40
unosonic
yes, had that 2 times, the pulled the hairs from the wind screen for their nests ;)
W
21:40
Wijnand
I bought this book to day, gives great background on the 'silence' of what is left on this planet:

Flavien, you've silenced them ;)

Sorry I typed too loud 🙂
GS
21:48
Grant Smith
i guess these peat bogs are very old..
u
21:49
unosonic
this isn't a peat area.
GS
21:50
Grant Smith
aha - i think i have a cross wire with another site you mentioned
u
21:50
unosonic
it's the remains of an old forest
GS
21:50
Grant Smith
so the water.. are there streams? or is it like claggy ground, which holds the water
u
21:51
unosonic
the name comes from a meeting between the king of Sweden and a prussian prince durung the 30y war
GS
21:51
Grant Smith
or like carr woodland, with alders..?
21:52
Heide is heath no?
21:52
which sounds quite dry
21:53
the sense of 'omni' - grabbing everything - is wonderful
u
21:53
unosonic
it is rather dry, the forest grows on sand. this spot is the only place with water in the whole forest
21:54
about 10m in diameter, and a belt of reed
21:54
fenced in order to protect it
MH
21:54
Michiel Huijsman
Huh Quiet small!
u
21:55
unosonic
earlier this year
GS
21:55
Grant Smith
ah i see - thank you - so this comes back to this idea of the value of these 'minor features'
21:55
also quite managed - nice
u
21:56
unosonic
yes it's managed, since there are rare amphibians
GS
21:56
Grant Smith
also at Stave Hill there are all these detailed micro habitats, which are made through hedge laying, dead hedges - all these foresting skills
u
21:57
unosonic
the fence itself is home for many mice, you can hear them sometimes
GS
21:57
Grant Smith
ah yes - Gilles Clement has nice thing about the ecological thickness of boudaries
21:57
which on maps are often conveyed as lines
MH
21:57
Michiel Huijsman
Yes, heard them just before the voices and siren. Nice mix!
u
22:01

the former german/german border is such an area. fortunately it now has become a continuous green belt under (hopefully) strong protection, 1400km long. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Green_Belt
GS
22:01
Grant Smith
ah yes! you know that film 'Die Brachen von Berlin'?
u
22:02
unosonic
havn't seen it...
GS
22:02
Grant Smith
about the new habitats and new ecological thinking at the Technical Univ of Berlin, focused on the flora of bombsites and rubble
22:05
yeah - people talking about these novel habitats.. https://www.naturaurbana.org/
u
22:06
unosonic
we have a feature here called eco-account (Öko-Konto). If construction takes place somewhere, nature must be compensated: An eco-account is the targeted stockpiling of compensatory and replacement measures that can be credited as compensation measures in the event of later interventions in nature and the landscape.
GS
22:06
Grant Smith
ah very interesting
u
22:07
unosonic
it's relatively new concept. the area where I've been today is such a "Öko-Konto"...
22:07
Michiel: I talk about the Wuhletal
GS
22:08
Grant Smith
one of the things in that film is about the detailed mapping of flora across the city
22:08
what is the Wuhletal?
22:09
it would be good if the acoustic diversity of a place such as this would explicitly be an element in the eco-accounting
u
22:10
unosonic
Wuhle is a 16km short river within Berlin.
GS
22:10
Grant Smith
i mean the soundworld of the pond
MH
22:10
Michiel Huijsman
Ah The Wuhle ;) We walked it in 2015!
u
22:11
unosonic
I did the first half today ;)
22:11
again
GS
22:11
Grant Smith
ah nice! extended pointillism
MH
22:12
Michiel Huijsman
Wow! It was a very warm day in Berlin, wasnt it?
GS
22:12
Grant Smith
so then the developers, when they drain a pond, need to deliver an equivalent soundworld to replace it.. which might be difficult..
u
22:12
unosonic
yes, but we started at 7am, so it was ok. no, it was great...
GS
22:14
Grant Smith
i have to go eat. thanks all. thanks udo! amazing!
u
22:14
unosonic
compensation / replacement of the sonic features sounds good...
22:14
see you soon! bon apetite!
GS
22:14
Grant Smith
soon - thx
u
22:15
unosonic
mice coming...
22:15
fireworks?

great stream! and interesting convo as well, thnx Udo and everyone else. i’m tuning in from western Colorado where we are in extreme drought conditions, it’s terribly, crispy dry here now, and more than 32C today, 8C over normal, uff, so frogs are nice to hear!!!
u
22:26
unosonic
welcome John! yes, the frogsound is cooling down, one can imagine a nice 18-20°C now there
22:30
what I (not always) like there is the sound of the city approaching from afar, but resisted by the local sounds, like a protected circle.
22:34
it's always a bit spooky when the bird songs stop at some point
TP
22:42
Tomasz Pizio
When it gets dark and you hear every mouse running around the imagination starts amplifying all the close sounds. Like those we hear now.
u
22:43
unosonic
we hear someone ...
TP
22:43
Tomasz Pizio
I have not watched a horror movie for years so that it would not come back in my imagination during a recording session in the forest at night
22:44
Isn’t that you adjusting the mics? 😮
u
22:45
unosonic
no, I'm at home...
TP
22:48
Tomasz Pizio
Are there wild boars in that area? That’s quite some noise from the branches. Has to be something heavy, I guess
u
22:48
unosonic
that's a human...
22:49
not without some suspense...
TP
22:49
Tomasz Pizio
Ok. I can hear talking now.
22:49
And zippers
u
22:51
unosonic
maybe someone catching rare amphibians....! I feel like going there immediately...
TP
22:52
Tomasz Pizio
Kinda sounds like they’re gently messing with the water
u
22:53
unosonic
in order to get to the water you have to climb a protecting fence
TP
22:54
Tomasz Pizio
These water sounds sugest something being taken out of the water and droplets falling back. A net? That is suspicious
u
22:55
unosonic
that's what I think
GF
22:57
Golo Föllmer
ah the intruders left, haha
u
22:57
unosonic
don't think so...
22:57
indeed there are some really rare toads there.

u
23:03
unosonic
I hate the idea of someone taking the animals away from there...
23:04
Pelobates fuscus lives there ("Garlic Toad", Knoblauchkröte)
TP
23:04
Tomasz Pizio
the question now is - is this a regular operation or were we so "lucky" to hear this today. I wonder if this would not be something to alert someone about. No idea if that would be police or some environmental guards.
u
23:06
unosonic
I'm checking who is taking care about. But probably there's not much one can do about it... I mean, I was really about to go there and have an argument...
TP
23:39
Tomasz Pizio
that's a great close-up squeaking!
u
23:39
unosonic
yes, and sniffing around the mics
SA
23:45
Sam Auinger
thanks to you Udo..listen now for two hours..again an incredible place for a MIc box..great atmospheric variety..now completely controlled by frogs
u
23:45
unosonic
yes, they took over... ;)
23:46
will make a aporee ::: maps midnight recording later, so switching off the stream in about 15min...
23:51
was again very nice to listen togehter with you. Be cautious when telling your friends about what you're doing at nice weekend evenings in spring... ;)

That was an exciting session. At least the supposed poachers were not murdering a congressman like in "Enemy of the state"....
