SONIC ISLANDS – Mirrored perceptions between Tierra del Fuego + Rügen
SONIC ISLANDS focuses on the various auditory aspects of the TERRA IGNOTA (http://terra-ignota.net) project and is part of TIF 2023/24. We are interested in the meaning of sound as a semantic system and as a form of artistic articulation. Questions about origin, identity, intercultural understanding but also about perception, legibility and interaction with the environment, social processes and structures beyond visually connoted reference systems are the subject of our joint research. Listening and making audible to stimulate changes of perspective in the process of artistic research and knowledge production as well as in communicating to an audience.

The research process will be conducted in Tierra del Fuego (March 2023) and on the geographically and culturally mirrored island of Rügen (September 2023) – both regions lie exactly on the same latitude (54°36’20.5 “S / 54°36’20.5 “N). The results are presented on the opposite sides in the different local contexts – literally drawing a straight connecting line through the globe. The themes connect both sites and are communicated through concrete site-specific sound installations, interventions, performances and listening essays.
20:30
documentation of the first part of that project in march 2023 you can find here:
http://terra-ignota.net/category/docu_tif23/
20:32
at this moment the box is at our base, a remote house in the middle of wide fields... at this moment you can hear some crickets and some ducks. eventually there is an owl and sometimes you her the horn of the steamtrain in the distant.
20:34
we plan to bring the box to different places in the next days, maybe also use the uplink to give you some context and have you listening in to some of our talks in the evenings. we'll keep you posted via this list.

@carsten_stabenow & SONIC ISLANDers: I've read through your field trip logs, it's an impressive approach to reveil the complex pattern of a territory. I wonder how and to which extend sound and field recording as a praxis did help to get an understanding the landscape, it's natural and cultural conditions, past and present?

the only explanation at hand is the re-gasification terminal in lubmin - which is basically opposite of our place accross the greifswalder bodden in 20-30 km distance. https://www-ndr-de.translate.goog/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/Das-raetselhafte-Brummen-Aerger-am-LNG-Terminal-Lubmin,dorfstadtkreis146.html?_x_tr_sl=de&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=de&_x_tr_pto=wapp
21:04
despite the discussions about the LNG terminal planned for mukran - the operation is already happening in lubmin (former end of the north stream pipeline)
21:07
we saw yesterday at least 4 big LNG ships offshore in fron of Binz.
21:07
21:09
@unosonic good question - i'll pass this one in to our group. i can answer only for my take (the language-landscape project and the long duration recording).
21:13
the first one was a verry applied attempt, where the recording of the voice playback under different conditions was later on systematically analysed. the whole idea for that project came out of the experience how important and existential voice (acoustic) communication is in such difficult territory.
21:14
the acoustic reenactment served as a very good tool
21:16
to understand the complex entanglements of landscape, social interaction, movement, orientation and in the case of the selknam dialect helpet to understand the particularities of that language.
21:21
the long duration recording was an exercise in registering and understanding patterns – similar to krauses ecological niche
– but with a stronger focus on timeline, movement, weather conditions, social interaction, etc. in a more abstact way (via spectrogram).
21:22
in fact i was surprised how much i later on listened back to the recording - i intended to use only the grafical translation but ended up listening back to a lot of the details.

update: the drone noise is not the re-gasification terminal – it is the operation of the ship wich is building the new pipeline to mukran port:

Makes a difference. Really divers morning mix now of calls of small and not so small birds, insects and wings very close, a fainth dronelike sound far away and once in a while a plane or a lonely car passing in the distance.
07:16
And now a frog. One frog.
07:26
A jetboat of sorts passing. The crows seem to be mad at something
07:32
The Cock calls.
07:33
Geese passing over talking loudly
07:43
A tit is very close and plucking the microphone cover
07:44
Makes for a strange contrast with the local Sparrowhawk here in Driemond making his first hunting round
07:45
A boat horn echoes several times in the landscape
07:48
Lots of dynamics but the low constant drone is always there
u
08:33
unosonic
why do we indentify that deep drone as distant? Is it because of the landscape context Carsten gave us, or is it because of the redundancy of that sound, its lack of fine-grain pattern? Anyway it's creating the depth of space for me while listening, sort of barrier which separates the nearby diversity from the horizon.

Yes, those planes certainly sound ominous. This is a very good location for hearing the weight of our current military/industrial mind set. It's not close or in your face, but constantly present, an unchanging, relentless, backdrop to the the natural sounds when they occur. A soundscape of vulnerability and the knife edge we have reached in our relationship to the environment.
11:34
Maybe this comment is partly a result of listening remotely. Interested to know if those present in person have the same reaction/impression.

It is present both the drone and the jets, but for me the overall sensorial presence of these places and environment Rügen softens it in a way. i agree that it is painful and it makes me angry and impatient because of the knowing presence through all these signs and traces. But regarding Peters I question i perceive somehow the acoustic "monitoring" via the microfone confronts and provokes this more then being on-site inside the multisensorial . But doing both, listening to the mics at different places in turns, realising through the extended senses otherwise a bit more hidden phenomana and further traveling, walking and exploring the island in different modalities is a very strong mix and experience
CS
21:18

what I find interesting in ol' Goethe's Faust is the ending of pt2: he goes through all the magic, sorcery, witchcraft, devilry, telluric spirituality, to finally build a dam that takes land from the sea. He became an engineer. The creation of new land was obviously possible only with the help of technical innovations that seemed like magic to the ancients.
