my AI in the flowerpot has heard Cranes flying over ..

Yes, I've been hearing them overhead in Berlin in the last 4 days too. Presumably these are the cranes that still migrate (many now overwinter in the regions around Berlin) returning from France or Spain. Very early - we're not half way through February yet.

Dear Radio Earth community...Katrin and I have just started a stream from a small castle park in Linz. The microphone is placed in a hollow in the park. We can only hear the evening traffic indirectly. There is no line of sight to the traffic. A small road runs through the park to the castle. And to the west, south and north, the park is surrounded by traffic, all in the direct sound shadow of buildings. We usually only hear the drone of the infrastructure systems and the respective animal sounds of the park depending on the time of day.
A tram line passes to the west. And a church is about 400 m away.
The visual appearance of the place is a beautiful green space. The basic sound is this wet monochrome city drone, which can only be heard if you listen carefully.

the basic mood of this listening location is a massive noise floor, a mix of all sound events reflected and colored by the surroundings of grown and built architecture.

I find it interesting, here in my office/studio, to have one of the remote recorder streams playing as I work on the computer, then, occasionally I'll turn it off, to hear the 'silence' (local sound floor) in juxtaposition ... it's an interesting change in sound pressure on my ears (as I'm remote/rural where the sound floor is ... well, I routinely hear the blood pumping in my ears as the basic floor ...

sorry I should have pointed it out that this is feature when the churchbells ring..it was just very present at 7:pm
19:14
when the bell tones happen, they are perfectly clear and reveal some aspects of the acustical situation at site they build some tonal intervals with asonic spects ofthe drone.. at 8pm it will happen again
19:16
I think what we can hear inthe drone that it is composed out of moving and stationary sounds coming from all the heating and climate systems of the nearer buildings
19:29
The "beauty" of this soundscape is its grey in greyness ...the aircraft, a couple of minutes before apeared like a new shade of the same color ..the same applies to the muffled horns and squeak sounds.i..and in the nearfield from time to time a rustling sound coming from moving bugs or leaves on the ground...

listening for 2 hours now, can't find beauty in it. the greyness is boring, redundant, and powerful. It's violent, distracting, it's everywhere and it won't go away soon, it's us..
SA

Sam Auinger
that is all correct,..maybe you can overcome the disgusting feeling and hear what it can tell about the circumstances. action and design.."beauty" is for sure provocative

hm. I think my, well, feelings come from what I hear, and know about how this soundscape and circumstances constitute. what kind of agency and energy is at work here. I don't know details of the place, but from listening and experience I have an understanding at least of distances, density of infrastructure, activity pattern. What the soundscape tells me, creates these rather depressive feelings.. So what exactly should I overcome? ;)
21:29
I think on the flirting tawny owls we here occasionally. They have ears shifted horizontally and vertically, and great hearing skills. I wonder if they suffer or just don't care. Any biologists on board here?

somebody or something is creeping around there in the bushes!

it's interesting though, despite the greyness, to listen to the background noise, it reminds me of how different the background is everywhere. Here everything seems so distant (except for the creepy footsteps)

for comparision, here's another mid-size town's live background, from Brno, Luzanky park. Brno has 100k more inhabitants than Linz http://locus.creacast.com:9001/brno_luzanky.mp3
Of course it sounds different, the Brno mic sits on the rooftop, and Sam's mic sits in a hole on the ground. Shades of grey...

I've been a little committed for a while now, into slowing down traffic in my quarter here in Berlin. The (green..) district has established a so called "Kiezblock", which actually is some bollards and new one-way streets, in order to prevent transit traffic through smaller streets. It really works for residents, but has sparked quite some reactions and property damage by hard core car drivers, who feel their rights are restricted. Some of the bollards have already been torn out or damaged several times ;) This will not stop voluntarily.

I almost completely lost my interest in +/- urban soundscapes, when it's simply and massively dominated by car traffic. No more artificial and artistic twists and tricks will help me here, unfortunately..

I described the mic location badly, the microphone sits in a park bay like in a big bowl..about 1,2 meter above ground in a leafless bush..

by the louder bird call you can hear that it is a big space...but the calls in this space are being caged with greynoise

louder bird call is a good point: birds need to sing/call louder in order to communicate , and less elaborated in their repertoire, because of overall increasing sound levels. A massive impoverishment of natural sounds and songs has long since set in here, which is largely ignored, let alone understood. And this general dumbing down is increasing. Which of your non-human neighbours do we know by their name?
Midnight over here.. I'll stop my rants for today 🙏🏼

I've had a machine listening for the last 30min, based on BirdNET-Analyzer https://github.com/kahst/BirdNET-Analyzer. It has recognized Blue tit, Green woodpecker, Nuthatch, Great Tit, Common buzzard, Goldfinch (Blaumeise, Grünspecht, Kleiber, Kohlmeise, Mäusebussard, Stieglitz). It should have heard also Robins and Starlings, though. Maybe the mp3 compression fools the algorithm. Some birds do sound like mp3 artifacts ;)

Thank you for this info..
10:56
thank you for your attention and comments,...our intention is to examine the green spaces in linz south for their auditory qualities and to hear how far the built-up surrounding space filters and shapes the traffic sounds in these spaces. what we are also interested in are the parallel cycles of planetary forces and economic and cultural processes and how they speak to us in these places.

Good discussions. I’ve mostly observed. It’s also important to acknowledge the time of year. The bird life analysis (ID) is important. It shows some degree of bio diversity. I’m curious how this diversity looks if you move from the center to points in the middle, edges and outside the city. This might reveal a range in the ‘parallels’ you mention.
11:03
Are there any ‘rewilding’ efforts in Linz, to let certain urban green spaces go? I’ve seen this in a few cities in Europe and quite a bit in Montreal last summer
11:13
As far as the Berlin traffic management goes it sounds like it might be based on the ‘Superblocks’ concept which is now used extensively in Barcelona. It has proven both popular for residents, ‘healthy’ for the city but controversial for car fans. Such urban planning strategies do provide an opportunity for sonic analysis.

Unfortunately, Berlin under CDU/SPD gov develops in the other direction. They increasingly ignore or sabotage the Berlin Bicycle Act. However, there are engaged citizens who try to establish things, eg. counters on balconies, for getting reliable figures:
