Sukanta wrote in an email about the stream / location:
*The mic capsules are attached on both sides of a piece of wood (22x3x2 cm) and it is sitting under a corrugated tin shed on the roof of the flat I live in. Crows are the most commonly heard birds in the stream. But you also hear Indian cuckoo, Indian myna, Sparrows, Kites, the Kingfisher, Black-hooded oriole, Parrots, Spotted doves and other birds in the daytime. At night you can hear owls and**street dogs. There is a playground just beside the house. You hear the kids playing in the afternoon and sometimes in the morning. The houses are very closely built in this part of the city. Talking and other human activities are the dominant feature of thi**s stream. A small food joint has recently opened on the ground floor of the house. They have an exhaust fan almost always running from 11 am to 11 pm. This fan is a very strong element of the stream nowadays and masks lots of small sounds which you can listen to when the fan is not present.*

This is what is going on on the street. We have municipal election on 19 Dec. And a political party is campaigning for themselves.

The variety of birds you've described at this place is amazing! Is that the case all over Kolkata? trying to imagine whether your place is an island or part of a connected system of green patches around the city.
12:31
seems honking has become a bad habit worldwide...
SM
12:32
Sukanta Majumdar
Where there are trees there are birds. Unfortunately many areas in Kolkata now don't have big trees. Particularly newly built areas
12:34
The eastern part where the city is growing now, is basically marsh land. There are not many trees there anyway. And I don't see much effort to grow new ones
12:34
Also the marsh land life is dying

biotope connectivity is a thing over here, on local and regional level, since the agricultural deserts have very bad effects on biodiversity.

True. it tells you also about some aspects of the city. Though traffic has definitely increased than before, but actually kolkata has much less cars than bombay or delhi. Eastern region of india is not doing financially well after the shifting of the capital from kolkata to delhi after the british left. Also this part of the city is not a place where rich people live. So, you don't see flows of cars even though this road is just off main road and an important road

This sound of campaign is very new you know. There used to be processions and some slogans with one loudspeaker attached to a cycle rickshaw. That was the sound of election campaign I heard while growing up. But now this small vehicle comes to the area and stops for sometimes and playback recorded voices and songs. And these songs are all made just for the election, promising something or saying how dedicated they are for people's good! Overwhelming usage of mobile phones, cheap internet and social media has completely changed the idea of campaign, hence the sound of it.

In response to Grant, I am not sure if people actively take part always. Because this is also overwhelming, almost like hammering so you don't forget they are there. Re the ritual and other practices, like puja, or evening prayers or just a small outdoor gathering in a local tea shop( which is very popular here, and known as "adda") I can say yes that participation is very active, but lots of people suffer for this overall loud quality of the soundscape. So it's a mixed feeling, sometimes you are part of it, but sometimes you hate it as well.

Thanks Sukanta - yes - it is tempting to idealise. On the other hand, at distance, you hear differently - as you and I have discussed! We could say something similar about the planes that fly over my house..
13:54
at least here we are presented with the technics of political speech, the machinery of flight - we witness it taking place
13:56
also the gaps in it - the in-betweens - when other organisms, ways of life.. reassert themselves - crows, dogs, people without megaphones..
13:57
this feels to me like a soundworld which operates as a commons, albeit with asymmetries, all kinds of exclusions, imbalances of access..

I wonder how the busy road nearby my house would sound during normal workdays, without car noise. It would immediately turn into a place sonically owned by the people and other vocalizing species...
