Hi all,
Tomorrow 18 july I will place a mobile mic at De Binckhorst in The Hague, The Netherlands, an industrial area that is being transformed into a live/work area. A population of wild chickens has thrived here for years. The chickens are the original inhabitants, for them De Binckhorst is home. A living room, bedroom and dining room at once. Curious what we will hear tomorrow.
The stream will be active 18:00 at the latest on https://radio.aporee.org:8443/mobilemic22

Thanks for the activation! A local has shared that Binckhorst’s chicken community came about when male cocks were left on the streets for their economic inefficiency, some decades ago. Though, seemingly, through their proliferation, some females must’ve joined the mix! Curious how tomorrow will sound.

Interesting! Is it soldered to the piezo before or after applying the rubber isolation?

Apart from the chickens one can often hear seagulls in the near distance. There is a waste management deposit nearby where they come at mass to feed upon

the thing I notice the most is how much air traffic there is. It is on a landing route for Schiphol. Curious to hear later at night when the traffic background has quietend. But I know that people race cars around there at night, so it could get quite exciting.

Already heard some tuned cars around 18:05…

The Binckhorst is traditionally (since the 1950's at least) a place of car culture. Car dealers, garages, scrap yards. There still are lots of them, although the city council is trying to transform it into a high density and "green" (ha) residential neighbourhood.

As you can see people still bring their dead cars there. Or use the place to caress their vehicle

Also, there seems to be a connection between cars and chickens.

I noticed there are actually at least two populations of wild chickens in the Binckhorst. These are separated by a six lane traffic artery but they are not so far from each other that they cannot communicate which they do a lot.
09:13
The mic is here, at the roost of the population based at an area between the Mercuriusweg and the Polluxstraat.
09:15
The white circle at the left of the satellite image is a gas holder of a now demolished gas plant. Here the other population lives. You can hear them calling in the distance

thanks for the explanation! so, what we hear has its socio/cultural/historical roots, interesting.
09:38
I mean, that's almost always so.. but cars and chickens are rather rare in this combination I guess ;) 🐥

Yes, and it goes a long way apparently. We had a talk with a worker in a storehouse (Jongeneel, picture), who told us the chickens used to live in the abundant scrapyards and used cars when he came to work here 37 years ago.

Any chance for the chicks to survive the planned transformation?

That is the main question. Possibly Justin or Renate can say something about that.

Not sure really, there would have to be an effort, perhaps linked to the development of green spaces there, which is being debated at the moment. Specifically small "pocket parks" versus one large (and probably boring) green area. I have a plan though. A public artwork which is both sculpture and chicken-shed with a built in live microphone ;-)

That sounds like a great challenge Justin especially in the context of this place. I like the idea of urban transformation including existing chicken inhabitants.

happens when archive.org is overloaded. no problem, a copy lies on aporee until it's uploaded. I've kicked it, now it's there

Wow, how thoughtful to keep a copy. I’m happy because I listened to a few particularly nice parts and annotated them for further processing. Thank you Udo.
